Continuing to what I have posted in my last two blog posts, today let’s talk about babywearing safety. While babywearing is fun, there are certain safety measures that have to be considered for the safety of both the carrier and the baby. Here are 5 important things to be considered for better safety.
1. Open Airway
The child’s airway always has to be open while babywearing. To ensure this, always carry the baby in an upright position and close enough to kiss the baby’s head. Monitor the baby’s breathing and make sure that his or her chin is off the chest. Also, make sure to bring the baby back to an upright position immediately after nursing.
2. Support for baby’s neck and back
Make sure that the baby’s neck and back are supported adequately. To ensure this, it is advised to hold the baby with knees higher than the baby’s bottom (ergonomic M- position) and while using a sling or wrap to support the baby’s esp. infants neck better.
3. Inspect carriers for wear and tear
Always purchase carriers from reputed and trusted manufacturers. Research on different brands available and purchase from the manufactures which meet all the safety. Examine the fabric, buckles, loose stitching once you receive the carrier. This is the foremost thing that has to be done when you rent a carrier.
Practice wrapping techniques well near a bed or a couch or low on the ground until you are confident of the technique. It is best if you can get the advice from a babywearing educator.
5. Do not babywear while traveling
Babywearing should be avoided while traveling in any moving vehicle, car or boat.
